|Dates of Creation||1864-1955|
|Scope & Content||
Papers relating to the genealogy of the Prior Family. Revolving largely around Charles H. Prior for whom Prior Lake is named, the papers include letters and notes, several unidentified images, an 1864 marriage certificate, telegraphs and newspaper articles and a typed list of family genealogy from 1734-1949.
Much of the Prior family emigrated from the East Coast to the Midwest in the 1800s but few actually lived in Scott County. Charles Prior was a civil engineer who went to work for the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul railroad in 1857. He worked in railroads his whole life and he made his fortune in that business. While Prior lived in Minneapolis, he owned numerous tracts of land in Prior township. When the township was organized in 1879, it was named in his honor.
