67 letters from Private (later Corporal) Richard Walsh to his mother Kathleen Walsh of Belle Plaine (letters are addressed to Mrs. Maurice Walsh). Richard Walsh was born and raised in Belle Plaine. His parents were Maurice and Kathleen (Lynch) Walsh, and he graduated from Belle Plaine High School. In May 1955 he married Mary Ellen Robel of New Prague.
Walsh was a member of the United States Army during the Korean War. These letters are dated between May 23, 1951 and December 22, 1952. Most were written from the Co. B, 61st Infantry Division Headquarters at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. Walsh was a cook there during the war for troops in training.
